Propecia is a brand name for the drug finasteride which was originally intended for the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia, but is highly effective in dealing with male pattern baldness. Propecia offers the convenience of a once-a-day-pill while the patient is required to go through at least 1 year of treatment to see stable results. This drug is one of the most popular and effective treatments dealing with the actual cause of baldness – DHT (Dihydrotestosterone) – chemical compound responsible for male pattern hair loss and prostate problems.

The results of clinical studies clearly demonstrate that Propecia is highly efficient – about 77% of men taking the drug reported some or significant improvement, including slowed down hair loss and hair re-growth. The first results are likely to become visible only after 3 months of continuous treatment, while no improvement within 12 months means that the drug is not efficient in the given case. Side effects of Propecia are rare (less than in 2% of cases) and may include erectile dysfunction, increased skin oil or acne, and breast gland enlargement. Such side effects go away once the patient discontinues the use of the drug. Propecia mustn’t be taken by women as it has been reported to cause birth defects.
